Coburg
The leafy suburb of Coburg lies immediately north of Brunswick, along Sydney Road and is 8km from Melbourne’s CBD. Coburg is the largest suburb in the Moreland City Council area, with a rich cultural history and a population of over 23,000. Most housing in the area dates from the 19th century, with some redevelopment of flats and villa units in the 1960s and 1970s. One notable instance is the transformation of Pentridge Prison to housing about ten years ago.
The Sydney Road shopping arcades, Coburg Town Hall and Coburg City Oval are well known their multi-purpose use and accessibility. The Victoria Street pedestrian mall is a modern and popular place for locals to congregate and enjoy excellent coffee. Notable shared-use trails popular for cyclists and pedestrians include The Merri Creek Trail and the Upfield Bike Path, where the regenerated species of native flora and fauna is enjoyed by locals.
Coburg contains the Moreland, Coburg, Batman and Merlynston railway stations and three tram lines service the area. Its central location mean getting around is easy whether you are driving, walking, cycling or taking public transport.
